METRO's Current DHP Subcontractor
Each year, with funding from the New York State Archives, METRO subcontracts with an archive or library in New York City or Westchester County to conduct archival surveys that provide documentation of communities, socio-cultural events, or time periods that are currently under-documented.
The most recent project undertaken with funding from METRO’s Documentary Heritage Program is a yearlong survey by New York University’s Tamiment Library and Asian Pacific American Institute to document the history of the Asian Pacific American (A/P/A) community in the New York metropolitan area. The Project Director, Dr. Michael Nash (Head of the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives), is working closely on this project with the Founding Director of the Asian Pacific American Institute, Dr. Jack Tchen (Associate Professor of History and Director, Asian/Pacific/American Studies at NYU).
The METRO funding supports dedicated staffing at NYU to conduct vigorous survey activities to identify historically important materials relating to the A/P/A experience and to develop long-term documentation strategies.
The survey will cover materials from organizations such as the Asian American Arts Alliance, the Asian American Writers Workshop, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, as well as the personal papers of individuals, including playwright David Henry Hwang, artist Fay Chiang, writer Jessica Hagedorn, and many others.
